About the youth service

The primary purpose of statutory Youth Services is to provide young people age 13-19 with a range of enjoyable opportunities, challenging experiences and effective support that will enhance their personal, social and educative development and sense of identity during the transition to adulthood. This happens by directly funding a range of community and voluntary provision and local authority maintained projects. The Youth Service also has an important role to play as a strategic lead for youth provision across other providers. Within the Youth Service there are a range of professional expertise covering youth work, health, education and social care but this defined by a knowledge of issues affecting young people. Hackney Youth Service targets 25% of the 13 to 19 age group although we work with older and younger people.

Youth Matters (2005) and Youth Matters Next Steps (2006) clearly set out the duty on local authorities to provide a range of activities and opportunities to young people. Hackney has been pro-active in embracing the changes needed and pre-empted this by consulting widely with young people and providers to produce the Hackney Youth Offer strategy (2005). This sets out a vision of how the council will move to meet these challenges in partnership with the community and voluntary sector. Hackney’s Youth Service has an important role to play in the delivery of the Hackney Youth Offer.
