Purple Bus

THE PURPLE BUS

The Purple Bus is a mobile IT unit that travels to different estates across the borough providing activities for young people. Users can gain accredited qualifications for IT packages; access the internet; take part in sessions on sexual health, crime and gangs; play computer games and take part in sports sessions and bike maintenance sessions outside the bus.

In January 2008 a second Purple Bus was launched by the Mayor of Hackney and a group of young people from Hackney Free School. The second bus is an updated version of the original vehicle and features a private room for individuals to have one-to-one talks with youth workers, better disability access and a pull-out stage area, as well as computers and flat-screen tvs.

Hackney Youth I.T. Bus provides services for young people aged 11 to 19 living in the London Borough of Hackney. The bus offers basic I.T. skills training as well as free time to play games and explore the internet (for free). So far we have run programmes on Word processing, Excel, Hero Machine, Fire Works and Publisher. We also do activities outside of the bus such as football, bike maintenance and basketball.
