February is LGBT History Month!
February is LGBT History Month and this year The Green Door is working in partnership with HackneyMuseum, the Community Safety Team, Gendered Intelligence and Hackney’s LGBT Police Liaison Officers to put on a series of events to celebrate contributions made by lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and trans people to all of our lives:
* Throughout February - Mid March: visit the HackneyMuseum to view the LGBT Time-line and watch the short film ‘Trans Journey’s’. This was made by young trans people who participated in the Sci:dentity Project 2006, which looked at the science of sex and gender
* Tuesday 19th Feb: for all young people - Fionn Greig, a member of Gendered Intelligence and also a youth worker at the Green Door, will facilitate a workshop on gender and trans awareness at the Hackney Museum from 1-3pm.
* Thursday 28th Feb: Hackney hosts LGBT Lifestyles, an all day event featuring a mixed program including interesting speakers, music, a healing tent a juice bar and stalls. One of the speakers is Elly Barnes, a music teacher at StokeNewingtonSchool, who will talk about her work to promote LGBT awareness in her school and others in Hackney. Later some of her pupils will perform songs they worked on to celebrate LGBT History Month. Further musical entertainment will be provided by Mz Fontaine whose experience of living in Hackney as a young black lesbian has influenced some of her lyrics.
* Friday 29th February: the celebration continues at the Joiners Arms on Hackney Road. From 6pm information of interest to LGBT people will be available, followed by a cabaret at 10 and then music till 4am – don’t forget your dancing shoes.
These events are open the general public, but the event on the 19th will be for young people only.
The club is open regularly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4pm – 9pm
